Heart Monitor

Heart Monitor

The EKG provides a snapshot of your child’s heart rhythm. For patients with symptoms like chest pain or fast heart beat, the cardiologist may need to examine the heart’s rhythm over the course of several days (up to two weeks). This is done by placing a heart monitor. This is set up in our office. A small device is adhered to the skin on the patient's chest. There is no pain involved. The child then goes home and wears the device for up to fourteen days (as determined by the doctor). The device remains hidden under their clothes. There are no activity restrictions while wearing the monitor except that it cannot get wet. In fact, we encourage children to go about their usual activities while wearing the monitor so we can see the effect physical activity has on the child’s heart rhythm. The child can go to school like normal, and since the device is hidden by clothing, the other children at school will not notice anything different. At the end of the monitoring period, the device is mailed back to the company that makes the device using the postage-paid box we give you. Once we have reviewed the results we will notify you.
